In a meeting held with the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths in Tehran, Zarif expressed Iran’s readiness to support any constructive role by the UN in settling the crisis in Yemen.
Deploring the tough conditions that the war and economic blockade have imposed on Yemeni people, the top Iranian diplomat reiterated that the crisis in Yemen would be resolved only with a political solution, not through an imposed war,Tasnim news agency reported.
For his part, Griffiths highlighted Iran’s efforts to establish peace and calm in Yemen, and explicated the UN’s plans to address the problems by ensuring a ceasefire, economic assistance to Yemen, and resumption of political talks in the Arab country.
Martin Griffiths arrived in Tehran on Sunday to consult with the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran on resolving the Yemeni crisis.
Yemen has been since March 25, 2015 under aggression by the Saudi-led coalition in a bid to restore power to fugitive president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is Riyadh’s ally.
Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been killed or injured by Saudi-led airstrikes.
The Arab impoverished country has been also under harsh blockade b the coalition which includes in addition to the Kingdom, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Morocco and Sudan.
